The Town of Crestone, Colorado and the adjoining 14,000 acre Baca Grande subdivision, is situated at the base of the northern end of the Sangre de Christo mountain range.

Tucked away in one of the most beautiful valleys in the world, this is a real gem of a community.   Inspiring and peaceful, this high desert environment is still pristine and abundant with wildlife – elk, deer and antelope, eagles and hawks, porcupines, coyotes and fox, and the occasional bear and mountain lion.   Pinion, Ponderosa pine and juniper trees abound, and 4 mountain creeks wind their way through the area.

The Baca Grande, or “the Baca,” is a 12,000 acre area that has been developed as a planned community and is governed by a Property Owner’s Association.  A variety of types of home sites is available.   The Chalets, nestled against the base of the mountains, consist of ½ acre treed lots. These parcels offer spectacular up-close views of the Sangre de Cristo’s along with expansive views of the 50 mile wide San Luis Valley and the San Juan mountain range on the western side of the valley. There are also 1-5 acre parcels out in an open area of the Baca known as The Grants. These parcels feature more panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo’s and lend themselves to living “off the grid”.  The Baca is bordered by the Rio Grande National forest, BLM land, and The Great Sands Dunes National Park.

Next door to the Baca, the Town of Crestone offers numerous amenities such as the Crestone General Grocery Store, the Crestone Mart hardware and convenience store, Twisted Sisters hair salon, Peak Printing, the Crestone Artisans Gallery, Crestone Creative Trade gift shop, Black Bear video store, and Shambala coffee house.  The local post office is also located in Crestone.  The area is home to many massage therapists and healers, offering an extensive range of healing modalities.

Currently there are three restaurants in the area -the centrally located Desert Sage Restaurant, Mac’s Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown Crestone, and the newly built Silver Crest Palace which offers world famous BBQ, an authentic western bar, pool tables, and live entertainment. There are also numerous B & B’s and other lodging accommodations to fit any and all of your needs.

To satisfy your spirit of adventure, this spectacular environment offers a number of options for outdoor fun.   There are six 14,000 foot peaks to be climbed: Challenger, Kit Carson, Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Humbolt Peak, and to the south, Blanca Peak, one of the four sacred mountains to the Navajo people, as well as numerous 13,000 foot peaks in between.  Nearby, The Great Sand Dunes National Park is fun to explore, boasting the highest sand dunes in North America. There are many other activities to pursue here in Crestone, including horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife observation, golfing, photography and more.  Within a half hour drive of Crestone, you can enjoy either a soak or a swim in the naturally warm and healing geothermal waters at three different hot springs; Joyful Journey Hot Springs, Valley View Hot Springs, and the Sand Dunes Hot Springs swimming pool (aka – The Hooper Pool). Within an hour’s drive to the North there is world class river rafting on the Arkansas River and skiing at Monarch ski area. Within two hours drive, to the west, is Wolf Creek ski area which receives the most snowfall in the state, and within a short three hour drive to the south is Taos ski area with world class skiing.

Quiet and secluded in nature, perfect for contemplation and retreat, this inspiring mountain setting has attracted spiritual groups to the area for hundreds of years. The first to arrive were the Native Americans.  They called this the “bloodless valley” and considered this place to be very sacred and still consider it to be today. In recent times since the early seventies we have seen the arrival of a variety of different spiritual groups including Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu to name a few.  As a result of land being gifted by the Manitou Foundation to various spiritual groups, there are a number of spiritual centers here such as the Carmelite monastery, the Crestone Mountain Zen Center, Haidakhandi Universal Ashram, and the Shumei International Institute, to name a few.  There are plenty of opportunities to explore these different traditions as well as other retreats and educational workshops.

If this magical setting calls to you as your place to settle down, please stop by and talk to us at Rose Realty.  We can help you find the land or home that is right for you, either here or in the surrounding areas.   We can help you find commercial property as well.  Or, if you are ready to sell your property here, let us put our expertise to work for you.

Our knowledge, sensitivity and guidance are at your service.
